Lateral Control of a Tailless Micro Aerial Vehicle

A feedback controller is analyzed for a tailless Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) which is to be used for in-situ sensing of toxic plumes. The vehicle will be tube-launched for rapid deployment. The stability derivatives for the lateral dynamics of the aircraft are determined using a combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics and lifting line theory. The state-space model is found to be both completely reachable and completely observable. A standard feedback controller and state observer are implemented. Results show that the aircraft, which is initially unstable, can be controlled with the techniques proposed.
